Early Life and Military Service

Luke Cyr hails from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. He served 12 years in the Canadian Armed Forces, including deployments in Bosnia and Afghanistan with the Royal Canadian Regiment, 3rd Battalion. His military tenure exposed him to intense combat situations, leading to lasting psychological impacts.

Post-Service Challenges

After retiring from the military in 2010, Luke faced significant difficulties adjusting to civilian life. He experienced symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), including depression and anxiety. Attempts to find purpose through various jobs and volunteer work were unfulfilling, culminating in a suicide attempt on October 30, 2021. This event marked a turning point in his life.

Path to Recovery

Following his suicide attempt, Luke sought help and was admitted to a psychiatric facility. He later received counseling at the Robbie Dean Family Counselling Centre in Renfrew, Ontario. During his recovery, a former military colleague introduced him to the Caddie School for Soldiers in St. Andrews, Scotland. This program trains veterans to become professional golf caddies, providing them with a renewed sense of purpose. Luke embraced this opportunity, which played a significant role in his healing process.

Founding the Luke Cyr Foundation

Inspired by his experiences, Luke established the Luke Cyr Foundation in 2023. The foundation aims to support individuals facing mental health challenges, with a focus on veterans, first responders, and those affected by PTSD. It provides resources, raises awareness, and funds organizations offering mental health services. Key beneficiaries include the Robbie Dean Counselling Centre and the Caddie School for Soldiers.

Continuing Impact

Luke’s journey from military service to mental health advocacy has made a significant impact. Through his foundation, he continues to support those struggling with mental health issues, emphasizing the importance of seeking help and fostering resilience. His story serves as an inspiration, demonstrating that recovery and purpose are attainable even after profound personal struggles.
