Luke Anthony Cyr is a retired Canadian Armed Forces member, mental health advocate, and the founder of The Luke Cyr Foundation. Born and raised in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Luke joined the Canadian Armed Forces at 18 years of age, embarking on four operational tours—once to Bosnia and three times to Afghanistan. Following physical and mental injuries sustained during his service, Luke was forced into retirement, confronting significant mental health challenges.
In 2022, as part of his recovery journey, Luke attended the Caddie School for Soldiers in St. Andrews, Scotland. This transformative program helped Luke rediscover his purpose and passion for life. Upon returning to Canada, he began working as a caddie at the renowned Cabot Links and Cabot Cliffs golf courses in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.
Inspired by his own experiences, Luke established The Luke Cyr Foundation with a clear mission: “Giving those who have retreated to the darkness a chance to embrace the light.” The Foundation supports veterans, first responders, and individuals facing mental health challenges, aiming to combat stigma, promote early intervention, and foster community reintegration.
Through strategic partnerships with organizations like the Caddie School for Soldiers and the Robbie Dean Centre, the Foundation offers crucial resources, funding, and awareness. Luke credits these partnerships as instrumental in his survival and recovery:
“The Robbie Dean Centre was there for me before I went to treatment. Without it, I wouldn’t be here today. The Caddie School for Soldiers gave me purpose and a reason to live. My goal with this Foundation is to help steer people away from darkness and allow them to embrace the light once again.”
— Luke Cyr
In its first year, the Foundation proudly contributed $12,500 each to the Caddie School for Soldiers and the Robbie Dean Centre, reinforcing its dedication to these life-saving initiatives.
Today, the Foundation continues to expand its impact by supporting initiatives such as the Luke Cyr Scholarship of Hope, which empowers students pursuing careers in mental health; Resilient Warriors, a support group dedicated to first responders and veterans in Sault Ste. Marie; and annual awareness and fundraising campaigns like the Road to Resilience, aimed at building strength and community among those who have experienced trauma.
Luke regularly engages with schools, retirement homes, and community organizations, advocating openly for mental health and fostering environments of support and understanding.
